What is MTFHR and How Does it Affect Me?
The MTFHR gene mutation is an inability to absorb folic acid, and it affects up to 40% of Americans. In addition to the inability to absorb folic acid, it builds up in the system and affects the person’s ability to absorb the more bioavailable form of methylfolate. Futher disruptions in copper levels can occur with buildup.
How can an MTFHR gene mutation affect fertility?
Folate is the natural form of folic acid and it is crucial for fetal development. Many women who carry this mutation might have frequent miscarriages due to a lack of diagnosis. This gene variant can not only cause fertility problems but also depression, anxiety, chronic pain and fatigue, migraines, and nerve pain.
Many have been told that all they have to do is supplement with methylfolate, but this is incorrect. You’ll need to avoid foods with folic acid to prevent in addition to supplementation.
What can you do if you have/feel you may have this mutation?
1. Take a prenatal with folate instead of folic acid
2. Stop eating foods that are enriched with folic acid (enriched wheat, breads, and grains). Check your labels and ultimately eat less processed foods.
3. Eat foods that support this condition such as dark, leafy greens, beef liver, and sauerkraut or other probiotic rich foods.
